Nokia is currently leading the smartphone market, but its competitors are starting to catch up.
Bolstered by high demand for new models, as well as the availability of lower-cost older models, the worldwide smartphone market grew by 79.7 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2011, according to a new report by IDC.
The report stated that smartphone shipments doubled during the time period, increasing from 55.4 million in the first quarter of 2010 to 99.6 million in 2011.
Nokia once again led the market as the top smartphone vendor in the world. However, the company is now facing stiffer competition than ever before - particularly from Apple and vendors that have released devices based on Google's popular Android operating system.
According to the report, Apple, Samsung and HTC all posted triple-digit growth during the quarter, with Samsung leading the charge with 350 percent growth. However, Samsung came in fourth in terms of market share, trailing Nokia, Apple and Research In Motion.
Several new smartphone models have already hit the market this year, including the Atrix from Motorola, the Thunderbolt from HTC and the Samsung Galaxy S2. RIM recently announced it will also release two new BlackBerry Bold models in the coming months.
