GIA expects Android to be the biggest smartphone OS by 2015.
Driven by an improving economy and the need to mobilize business, smartphone adoption is expected to soar in the coming years, surpassing 1.6 billion units by 2017, according to a new Global Industry Analysts report.
The report noted that the smartphone market was not bulletproof during the recent economic downturn. However, it did fair significantly better than the mobile phone market as a whole. Attracted by new devices based on Google's Android and Apple's iOS mobile operating systems, as well as evolving technology, both consumers and enterprises have begun making the transition from traditional mobile phones to smartphones.
According to GIA, Android will become the leading mobile OS by 2015, capturing nearly 500 million users. At the same time, GIA said it expects Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS to emerge as a real player in the market, supported by its recent alliance with Nokia.
GIA's prediction reiterates a recent report by comScore, which found Google had become the No. 1 smartphone OS developer in the United States between November 2010 and February 2011. According to the report, Google captured 33 percent of the market in that period.
